It’s been 25 years since we have had a championship team in Philthadelphia, the city of brotherly love. We need some luck to go with that love! Although, the Phighting Phillies seem to have the skills to pay the bills. Let’s get it done tonight.

I’m up in here working on collaboration with Zap Mamma.

Zap Mamma is an amazing Belgian artist of African descent. This music is the funkiest, dirtiest, world beat, triphop I’ve heard. Fueled by the crisp and intimate vocal personality of Zap Mamma the music swirls through genres of hip-hop, afrobeat, and tribal rhythms with emotions that delve deep in the soul.

I met Marie (Zap Mamma), 2 years ago at the Monterey Pop Festival and we exchanged numbers. On our European tour this past July, she joined us onstage in Amsterdam for “Grandmother” and “Can I kick it”. Shortly after that Marie asked if I would like to join her on a track for her forth-coming release. Oh yeah, would I ever.

So, here I am up in the studio while this funky thing is going down. We worked on a down tempo joint called “Drifting” or “Please come on”. Then I blazed some mean electric harp on this untitled afrobeat joint.
This record is gonna be the jam. Aight, I got to get back to work here. These Funky Francois speaking dames are ready for G to drip-drop-drizzle some more crunky rain on this track.

Peace.

What’s up Fam? I am 30,000 feet up in the sky somewhere above the Midwest. Only 2 more hours of my 12-hour flight from Tokyo to DC.  We had a great tour in Japan and many thanks to all of our Japanese fans who represented. The vibes were thick and every show was hot.

Our last show was on the island of Fukuoka and after a slamming show we had one last funky dinner. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the Japanese cuisine is the best and most eclectic in the world. Every night after the show we have big group dinners. The food and sake flows till you just have to get up and get out before you explode or have some kind of damn Maalox moment at the table. Uggggh. Self control so hard…

On our last dinner, we asked to try something different and they served us, get this…raw horse. No joke. Raw horse. It’s a traditional Japanese food. I have to say it was pretty good, just like Carpaccio. Honestly, I couldn’t get past the fact it was horse. Even though it was tasty, I moved onto the fish roe omelets! I’m telling you, I was raised to try everything at least once and most foods I love. Another thing I tried on this tour was fish nuts.  I didn’t even know fish had nuts well, lest just say I won’t be trying them again.

So, now I’m flying home to the family and I have a couple weeks off before my two last shows of the year. Salt Lake City and Denver. Both of the shows are free for the radio station listeners of KENZ in SLC and KBCO in Boulder/Denver.  After those two shows I go to get laser surgery on my vocal chords followed by 2 weeks complete voice rest and 2 months of vocal rehab before we hit the road again in Feb 2009.

Those of you who keep up with these blogs have heard about my vocal injury.  After being dogged by a bleeding vein on my vocal chords for months now, I finally have an opportunity to correct this problem before I do permanent damage to my voice.

I am going to do an in depth journal of the procedure and recovery.  I think I will learn a lot about the voice box and hopefully any other aspiring singers won’t have to end up where I did after 15 long years on the road.

The surgery itself is pretty basic and I will feel fine. I’m certainly not looking forward to being completely silent for two weeks. But I gotta do what I gotta do to get back on that stage.  I plan to practice my guitar and really get back into playing those mean old Delta Blues. I’m going to write a lot and spend a lot of time with my kid. I haven’t been off the stage for three months ever so it’s a tough pill to swallow but I will keep you posted.

Thanks to everyone, fans, band, crew and family for a great summer tour and giving me so much inspiration to keep our musical movement flowing forward!

I couldn’t do it without you.

Thanks

G

Mt. Fuji Rocks
Oct 06, 2008

What up Y’all !!  I’m sitting in my room at the Shibuya Excell Tokyo overlooking the throngs of bobbing heads as they hustle and bustle their way through the main crossing at Shibuya Station in downtown Tokyo, Japan. Last night we jammed the Asagiri Jam at the base of the famous Mt. Fuji. It was the joint!

Rewwiiiiiiiiiind

More on the Jam in a minute. So, after last weekend in Austin and Laguna I headed back to Boston for some R&R and just really relaxed which was nice.  I was flying to Japan out of NYC so on 10/1 I jetted down to the big city for a couple nights before my plane on the best day of the year...10/3, my B-day!!

Because the Black Crowes cancellations left me stranded without my tour clothes, and due to a myriad of post touring botchups I still hadn’t got my luggage or my stage clothes so I had to treat myself to some new duds suitable for the stage. There’s this great vintage store in Greenwhich Village on Greenwhich St. just below 7th and 11th that’s called Star Struck. I’ve bought some cool clothes there including the green leisure suit I wore on the Lemonade record.  I was able to find a couple of sick black western shirts for my tour. If you go just tell them G. Love sent you. He will probably kick you out!

I had a nice mellow birthday dinner with my family and saw my little baby niece, she is just the cutest thing ever. My mom cooked up a storm and made me a bomb apple crisp for dessert. Crisp, any kind of crisp, a la mode is my favorite dessert of all time. Mom always nails it too. After my dinner we hit a couple clubs to celebrate and we did it right. Needless to say, I over celebrated and didn’t wake up until the next morning when I realized I missed my alarm, my ride, and my flight! Oh shit! Luckily, I was able to get on another flight and I made it to Japan!

After the 15-hour flight, during which I finally got to see Hancock (I play some harp over the song on the end credits), I arrived in sunny Tokyo and jumped in the van for a nice 4-hour drive to Mt. Fuji. I was worn down, worn out, strung, down, strung out and just plain exhausted. We had some delicious miso ramen noodles and got horizontal.

I woke up early the next morning. The jetlag I experience in Japan is like a lifestyle. It completely dominates my whole schedule. It always ends the same too, the minute I regularize myself and feel human again, its time to go home. That’s life.

I took a run alongside some rice paddies while Mt Fuji looked down and headed back to the van to ride to the Asagiri Jam.

We arrived onsite and had 2 hours to get ready for our early 1:30 pm hit. Right before our set I got to see this great band from the UK called Kitty, Daisy and Lewis.  Theses guys are a family band all brothers and sisters with the mom and dad as well. Completely old school man. I loved it. The girls were playing harmonica and drums and it was something else to see them shuck and jive.

We hit the stage next and from the first note it was on. I thought our ACL hit was sick but this set even topped it. The band was loose and funky, the vox were hot and strong and I was flowing like Lil Wayne’s bank account.  Talk about starting off with a bang...man, it was on!  Our 50-minute set was tight and right:

The Things I used To Do
Don’t Drop it
Back of da Bus
Holla
This Ain’t Livin’
Georgia Brown
Who’s Got The Weed
Cold Beverage/freestyle
Peace, Love and Happiness
1234

It was a sick show thanks for a great show to all the jammers at Mt. Fuji

I gotta run and see the Emperor yo!

Peace out
G

Austin City Limits Wrap Up
Sep 30, 2008

What a weekend. I’m flying home American Airlines service LAX-Boston. Man I’ve gotta piss so bad but the lady next to me is sleeping hard and I just don’t have the heart to wake her up so I’m typing this letter. Ahhhhhhh…this beautiful September weekend was a funky whirlwind. I flew from Boston to Austin on Thursday and after what seemed like myriad of flight cancellations.  I finally arrived in the Lone Star state to play the best fest in the world, Austin City Limits.  This was a big year for us as we were finally headlining our stage. I had an appointment with my vocal coach Shirley Gherson 3 days before the gig who put me on more vocal rest. I was nervous I wouldn’t make it after pushing too hard in Telluride. I shut down pretty good for three days and when I hit the stage at 7:30pm I was ready. We had our best set ever at ACL with an awesome sit-in from Slightly Stoopid on Mellow Mood. The band played great and my voice felt strong. Right before my set I jammed “Baby I like it” with SS and right after my set I ran to Donovan Frankenreiter’s last two tunes and played some harp.  After the DF sit-in I caught a bike cab back to the hotee to get ready for my late night set at La Zona Rosa. I was scared my voice was blown out but I hit the stage at La Zona and felt even stronger. DF and SS joined us for jams at the late show and it was in fact a funky good time.

The next day we jetted to LAX rented a convertible and drove down the PCH to Laguna Beach for DF’s benefit. We macked out at a fancy hotel and jammed a cool mini solo set for cancer and AIDS research. Let’s find a cure!  Also on the bill was my homie Matt Costa, Sugar Ray and whaaaat?? Warren G from Tha Dogg Pound--talk about an eclectic bill at The Coach House.

Sunday morning found me on the beach at Salt Creek competing in the pro/am surf contest with Rob Machado, Tim Curren, Pat O’Connel and others. I won third place again in the legends heat. Not the best not the worst. Not bad at all for a street musician from Philly. Anyways it was a killer weekend thanks to everyone who came to rock out with us. Our fans are the best!

Now- I’ve really got to excuse myself- PLH! G
